Controlled breathing techniques have been practised for millennia in the East and have since gained popularity in the Western world due to their claimed health benefits. Despite this, they remain relatively untouched by the medical community. We recently published an article on slow breathing – how it affects the body, what might be the optimal technique for human health and the potential clinical applications. Management and treatment of tendon injuries and tendinopathy is limited. Autologous therapies have gained interest over recent years due to their potential to assist the healing process and promote tissue regeneration. They involve using the patient’s own healthy cells to treat the condition. An Australian regenerative medical company (Orthocell Ltd) has developed an effective autologous therapy for use in damaged or degenerated tendons that have not responded to traditional treatments. It has been our pleasure to have Dr Stanley Wong from the Department of Anaesthesiology, University of Hong Kong with us for the past three months.

Etanercept is an injectable medication used to treat various inflammatory conditions. Etanercept modulates the inflammation process by binding to and blocking Tumour Necrosis Factor (TNF) – a cell signalling protein (cytokine) that promotes and mediates inflammation. Increased concentrations of TNF are found in acute and chronic inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, intervertebral disc disorders and spinal nerve trauma/irritation (radiculopathy).
